“Yellow Rose, Green Leaf“
What?
Over two years ago, I took this photo of a bloom from my wife’s new yellow rose with my cellphone. This bloom had struggled to bloom past the forest of leaves and thorns.
Why?
Yellow and green. Light and dark. Furled bloom and spread leaves. Focus and blur.
When you contrast two objects, two characters, two places, etc., in more than just one way, you increase the tension between the two and build up towards the inevitable climactic conflict.
Also, the bloom and leaves have commonalities. They’re parts of the same rose, made from similar components.
Spider-man and Doctor Octopus.
Thor and Loki.
Gandalf and Saruman.
