Musical Inspirations
I’m researching two more short stories set in my short story published by Raconteur Press‘s “Hooves, Tracks, and Sabers” antho. I am so indebted to Dr. Young, the guest editor, and the great folks at Raconteur Press for the opportunity to write the story of Joshua and Nate of the Continental Light Dragoons.
And, when I research, I need to read, watch, and listen a lot of different sources.
In the past month or two, I was exposed to an awesome musician, who tells tales of the opening of the American West prior to, and after, the Seven Years War, AKA the French-Indian War. The first ‘world war,’ by the way.
Hawken Horse’s “Longhunter” captures the vibe of the 18th Century Ohio Territory. Here are two of my favorite songs from the album.
The first song is about the Pennsylvania long rifle, which was developed from the German Jager rifles that some immigrants brought to the region.
This song shares the vibe of Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, and others who pushed into the region, hunting, trading with Native Americans, and fighting the French and their Native allies.
Here’s the whole album.
I’m not limited to just background music and books. When I wrote the original story, I would watch the following video by Gordon and Nancy Frye to make sure I was getting points right.
This video had a massive effect on my understanding of the military employment of horses. Along with the e-mail conversation I had with Mr. Gordon.
Much gratitude, Mr. Gordon and Ms. Nancy. 🙇♂️ (If all y’all can’t tell, that’s a Japanese bow. Over six years living in that country has had an impact on many of my habits. 🙂)

Aaaannd, I forgot to ask the AI-dustbunnies for an image for this post. 🤦♂️ Well, I am very excited by the music and educational videos that help me with these short stories.
Well, the dustbunnies have no clue about “flintlock firearms.” 🤦♂️ And, I’m not even sure whether that’s a firearm or a polished branch. 🤣
Gotta love those dustbunnies.
Anyway, that’s enough about the story of the Continental Light Dragoons. Go and give a listen to other songs by Hawken Horse.
All y’all have a great week! 👋
